29 November, 2016

On November 25, the Army House (Cercul Militar-CCA) of Bucharest hosted a scientific conference entitled “The National and Ethnic Identities of Communities of the Diaspora in the Public Realm”. The conference was held on the sidelines of the European Diasporas networking program and organized by Armenian General Benevolent Union Europe Chapter, in partnership with the Union of Armenians of Romania, the Department of Political Sciences at the University of Bucharest, the Goldstein Goren Center for Jewish Studies, the Greek Cultural Foundation and other student and non-governmental organizations. The goal of the conference was to examine the manifestations of national and ethnic identities in the public life of various diasporas in Europe, the impulses and obstacles for the preservation and development of those identities, as well as various influences on those identities.

Among the speakers were Head of the Department for Inter-Ethnic Relations adjunct to the Government of Romania, State Secretary Aladdin Amet; Executive Chairman of AGBU Europe Nicola Davidian (Brussels), as well as President of the Union of Armenians of Russia Varujan Vosganian (video message); envoy of the RA Embassy Ashot Grigoryan (video message); President of the Jewish Student Association of Europe Bennie Fisher (video message), photo journalist and author of the album “The Armenians in Romania” Andrea Tanase (video message). Armenia’s guest researcher Babken Matevosyan delivered a speech entitled “Identity in the Diaspora and the Role of Historical Memory”.

During the sessions, Mihai Chioveanu; lecturer of the Goldstein Goren Center for Jewish Studies Felicia Valdman, as well as lecturers of the University of Bucharest, Dr. Oana-Valentina Suciu, Dr. Katerina Prada, Camelia Maria Krechun and others delivered speeches devoted to various aspects of European Diasporas and national identity issues.

In the evening, the Army House hosted the opening of a photo exhibition showcasing photos of European diasporas (including the works by notable Romanian-Armenian architect Dimitrie Maymarolu). The exhibition has already been showcased in Brussels, Plovdiv, Naples, Barcelona and Athens.
